Step 1: Understand the Game and Character Role

Before drawing anything, understand the game.

This is one of the most important steps in creating a game character because the character
needs to belong naturally in the game's world.

Ask questions such as:

  •  • What type of game is it?
  •  • Who is the target audience?
  •  • What is the game's setting?
  •  • Is the world fantasy, modern, futuristic, historical, or cartoon-based?
  •  • Is the character a hero, villain, NPC, enemy, or side character?
  •  • What abilities does the character have?
  •  • What is the character's personality?
  •  • How will the player interact with the character?

Imagine you are designing a character for a fantasy adventure game. A modern business
suit may not fit the world unless there is a specific story reason for it. The character's design
should support the game's story and gameplay. Think About the Character's Role .

The character's role can influence almost every design decision.  A warrior may need armor and weapons. A
magician may need magical accessories or a staff. A futuristic soldier may need technology-based
equipment.

Understanding the role before sketching helps prevent unnecessary changes later.

Step 2: Research and Collect References

Once you understand the character, begin researching

Reference images help artists understand clothing, anatomy, hairstyles, weapons,
architecture, historical objects, animals, and other important details.Create a reference
board containing images related to the character.

For example, if you are designing a pirate character, your reference board might include:

  •  • Pirate clothing
  •  • Ships
  •  • Weapons
  •  • Hats
  •  • Boots
  •  • Belts
  •  • Accessories
  •  • Facial hair
  •  • Ocean environments

However, references should be used for inspiration and understanding, not for
directly copying another artist's work.

You can combine different references to create something original.

Create a Mood Board

A mood board is a collection of visual references that communicate the feeling of the character.

You can include:

  •  • Colors
  •  • Clothing
  •  • Shapes
  •  • Materials
  •  • Environments
  •  • Art styles
  •  • Facial features
  •  • Objects

A good mood board helps keep the design visually consistent.

Step 3: Create the Character Concept

Start with simple questions:

Now it is time to turn the idea into a character concept.

Who is this character?
What makes this character different?
What does the character want?
What is the character afraid of?
What are the character's strengths and weaknesses?

You do not need a perfect drawing at this stage. The goal is to develop the
character idea.

For example:

Character: Young fantasy warrior
Personality: Brave, confident, and curious
Role: Main hero
Weapon: Large sword
Special Ability: Fire-based attack
Visual Theme: Red, black, and metal
Story: A young warrior protecting their kingdom

This information gives the artist a clear direction.
