professional game art with Hellios.

Step 10: Create Character Poses and Expressions

A game character usually needs more than one image.

Depending on the game, the character may need:

  • Idle pose
  • Walking pose
  • Running pose
  • Attacking pose
  • Jumping pose
  • Victory pose
  • Defeat pose
  • Talking pose
  • Special ability pose

Facial expressions may include:

  • Happy
  • Angry
  • Sad
  • Surprised
  • Scared
  • Confident
  • Excited

Expressions and poses help communicate the character's personality.

They are also useful for animation, marketing materials, menus, cutscenes, and promotional artwork.

Step 11: Prepare the Character for a Game

A beautiful illustration is not always ready to be used inside a game.

Game-ready artwork needs to follow the technical requirements of the project.

For a 2D character, this may include:

  • Correct image resolution
  • Transparent background
  • Proper file format
  • Organized layers
  • Sprite sheets
  • Separate body parts
  • Animation-ready pieces

For a 3D character, requirements may include:

  • Optimized polygon count
  • Proper topology
  • UV layout
  • Textures
  • Materials
  • Rigging
  • Skin weights
  • Correct export settings

The artist should communicate with the game developers during this stage.

Designing with technical requirements in mind can prevent major problems later.
